The next stage of the study

If you have a confirmed result of pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes (T2DM) you will be invited to take part in the next stage of the study. We will invite you for an appointment where you will have a chance to ask questions and find out more about taking part. If you choose to continue you will be randomly assigned to one of three groups, these are:

If you are randomised into the control group you will have a one-off diet and lifestyle education session. This session will last for two hours. Anyone with detected T2DM randomised into the control group will also receive standard care from their GP.

You will have 5 clinical visits at 6, 12, 24 and 40 months where we will take body measurements which will include:

These appointments will take approximately 30 minutes.

In this group you will attend a series of group education and exercise sessions.

There will be six education sessions which will be held every two weeks and each session will last for two hours.

These will be followed by 15 maintenance sessions. The maintenance sessions will be held every eight weeks and each session will last for 2.5 hours.

You will also have five visits to the clinic at 6, 12, 24 and 40 months for body measurements to be taken which will include:

These appointments will take approximately 30 minutes.

In this group you will attend a series of education and exercise sessions as described above, in addition you will be allocated a Diabetes Prevention Mentor (DPM) whose role is to provide support and encouragement by telephone to the participants for the duration of the study.

Your Diabetes Prevention Mentor will contact you by telephone every four weeks during the education session period and every eight weeks during the period of maintenance sessions to discuss your goals and progress. Each call will last for about 15 minutes and you will need to engage in these calls.

You will also have five visits to the clinic at 6, 12, 24 and 40 months for body measurements to be taken which include:

Participants in all groups will also be asked to complete questionnaires and be asked to wear an accelerometer, a device which measures steps and records physical activity data.
